Kate's Film Club: The Wedding Banquet
This month, our resident film buff 💪 Kate Corcoran is combing the digital and sometimes even physical shelves of the video store to find the niche wedding movies worth exploring. Over-the-top gowns, heartbreaking honeymoons, and more await you this month in Kate's Film Club...

This cutie queer 90s movie is a bit of a mess! It starts out a kind of funny mess, then becomes an actual real bad mess, and ends with sweetness... that will probably eventually become a mess.
It follows a super handsome, first-gen, Taiwanese American, 30-something gay man who is not yet out to his parents. The parents are desperate for him to get married to a Taiwanese woman and give them a grandchild. Of course this leads him to a sham wedding to a gal who needs a green card, and chaos ensues.
This movie doesn’t age amazingly, and there’s definitely a rape scene that’s swept under the rug very quickly, but it’s somehow still a good watch?
There’s just something about 90s NYC that gives you all the right feels! Also enjoyed the fun and awkward scenes exploring the differences in Chinese and American wedding traditions. Barf to the garter tradition - we’re not still doing that, are we?!
A few wedding aesthetics that deserve a callout:
-Let’s say yes to rings on top of short white lace gloves!
-Let’s say yes to cheesy wedding photos with bad backdrops!
-Let’s most definitely say yes to a pink sparkly second look with a scarf!
Final Rating:
I’m rating The Wedding Banquet 68/100 bouquet tosses! 💐
