Runway Deep Dive: Carven Spring 1999
Carven Spring 1999 Couture Runway
Why don’t we hear more about Carven?
The French brand was started by Marie Louis Carven (Carmen de Tomasso), aka Madame Carven, in 1945. At 5’1, Carven set out to make petite friendly clothes that flattered smaller frames. (Something I greatly appreciate as a petite woman myself.) Madame Carven saw many decades of success before retiring in the 90s.
The label went through some highs and lows after Madame Carven’s retirement. But I feel like the shows of the late 90s (under the leadership of designer Edward Achour) are often underrated and deserve a second look…
Specifically the Spring 1999 Runway collection. The show is filled with bright whites and swaths of lace, making it great inspo for modern brides.
Some Spring 1999 collection goodness.
These dresses would make the perfect bridal shower or rehearsal dinner look. Despite its modest silhouette, the netted sheer top on the dress gives a little sex appeal.
The right-hand side photo is another no-brainer for me. The large format appliqué gives hints of skin through the “ladylike” lace. Feeling both chic and flirtatious.
A party in the front and a party in the back.
This design feels like a tassel shawl converted to a dress. The casual drape makes it effortless, while the floral bustle adds a playful touch.
Can you imagine stepping out on the dance floor of your afterparty in this stunner?
