Fashion Glossary: Mantilla Veil
Illustration by Leah Shkolnick. Frame by Sharon Dennard.
A mantilla veil is a style of veil with origins in Latin America, Spain, and among various religious institutions. The mantilla veil differentiates itself from other veil styles in the way it is worn flat against the head (with the help of hairpins, small combs, and hairspray) with little to no gathering, as opposed to a drop veil that features gathered tulle attached to one larger comb. Mantilla veils often feature a thick lace trim or are entirely made of lace.
While traditionally, the mantilla veil was seen as a head and shoulder covering that spoke to your reverence for the church, the veil rose in popularity outside religious ceremonies with brides in the 1920s and 1960s. Modern-day brides are increasingly loving this style for its elegant and striking look.
