Sleek and Striking

In 1990, Julia Roberts wore an off-the-rack men's Armani suit to accept her Golden Globe for Steel Magnolias. That suit sent sartorial shockwaves through fashion, and the following year at the Golden Globes, the influence of Julia and her Armani suit was all over the red carpet. (A look still influential today; see Ayo in Loewe for this year’s event.)
But 1991 wasn’t all just sharp lapels and menswear-inspired silhouettes (but it was *a lot* of it.) The Golden Globes 48th annual Red Carpet saw stars of the 90s sporting vibrant cherry reds, sleek minis, and something so flirty and playful we think someone needs it for their after party…
Julia Roberts
We must begin with the gal who started it all. Julia was nominated in 1991 for her iconic role in Pretty Woman. She walked the red carpet in a pinstripe skirt suit that offered a slightly sexier look than her menswear look from the previous year.
Faye Dunaway
Dunaway opted for a relaxed white double-breasted suit with a crewneck blouse underneath that makes us wish she was in the First Wives Club. This is an early iteration of Dunaway's red carpet recipe for the 90s. Chic suit, loose hair, and a face that won't quit!

Whoopi Goldberg

In 1991, Whoopi won for her role in Ghost. But there's nothing ghostly about this vibrant tangerine skirt suit with a curved hem. Also, note the sheer black stockings - another trend from the 1991 red carpet.

Demi Moore

2025 was Demi Moore's first Golden Globe win. Still, although she walked away from the 1991 awards show (nominated for Ghost as well) without a trophy, her red-carpet look made her a winner. The oversized tuxedo suit paired with her (then) signature cropped hair was just the start of what turned out to be a year of iconic moments for Demi. (Hello, Vanity Fair cover.)

Kirstie Alley

Nominated for her performance in the TV show Cheers, Kirstie wore a double-breasted tuxedo dress by designer Richard Tyler with a sheer blouse underneath. Kirstie hit on all the trends for the carpet that year. Sheer black tights, suiting, and luscious, unfussy hair. We're also big fans of her husband Parker's bolo tie...

Andie Macdowell

Andie Macdowell bucked the wave of suiting in 1991 and opted for an open-back silver mini that just looks like a good time. On top of that, she did not win in '91, yet somehow, every photo of Andie from the show is her holding someone's award. Whose? Unclear. Proof that if you look fabulous enough, you *are* a winner, baby!

Jill Goodacre

Texas supermodel Jill Goodacre (who Millennials might know best as the model stuck with Chandler in the ATM vestibule in the Friends  episode "The One with the Blackout") sported a striking cherry red off-the-shoulder mini with sheer black stockings (of course.) This look makes us think that Jill might be the next 90s model the TikTok girls will look to for inspo...

Nicollette Sheridan

Now brides, tell me, you don't need this look for your afterparty? The basque waist, the Pammy-esque tousled up-do, and those shoes!!! 10 out of 10 for Nicollette. Bonus points if you spied a pre-Lisa Rinna Harry Hamlin behind her.
